Sarah Helen
Simmons
Apr 1, 1938 — Apr 4, 2026
Sarah Helen Simmons, age 88, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026. She was born on April 1, 1938, in Sandy Creek, Florida Walton County to the late Ben Kelly and Amilee Aplin Kelly.
Sarah began her service with the Sheriff's Office on October 1, 1981 and retired on March 31, 2000, where she was deeply respected and admired by her coworkers. Known for her efficiency, steadiness, and quiet competence, she carried out her responsibilities with excellence and integrity.
Outside of her work, Sarah found joy in the simple and beautiful things of life. She loved flowers and took great pride in planting and tending to them around her home. She was a talented seamstress who enjoyed embroidery and quilting, often creating pieces that reflected both her patience and creativity. Sarah also loved to travel, was an avid reader, and earned a special reputation among her family as the "Scrabble queen," always ready for a game and rarely defeated.
Sarah was a faithful member of Darlington Baptist Church for as long as her health allowed, and her life reflected a quiet strength and enduring faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Clifford Simmons and Billy Simmons; her sisters, Mary Ellen Simpler, Margie Kelly, Eva Mae Cooley and Jean Horne; and her brother, Buck Kelly.
She is survived by her son, Buddy Simmons (Harriet); her grandson, Josh Simmons (Heather); and her beloved great-grandchildren, Reagan, Amelia, and Lucas Simmons, who affectionately knew her as "Granny Sarah." She is also survived by her sisters, Judy McLean (Roger) and Janet Stafford (Coy).
Funeral services for Sarah Simmons will be held Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home with Barry Joiner and Terry Smith officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Eight Mile Cemetery.
