Obituary

Rosa "Wanda" Harrison (née Phillips), age 86, passed away on January 21, 2023, surrounded by family. She was born on February 6, 1936 in Macon, Georgia to Wade and Sarah Phillips. She was raised in Florala from the age of 3. She was in the class of 1954 graduating  from Covington County High School (now Florala High School). She was preceded in death in 2017 by her loving husband, Furman Harrison. They eloped at lunch as seniors in high school on February 15, 1954, and some said it wouldn't last. Well, folks did not know about this kind love, everlasting and true. For the next 63 years, they were role models of love, kindness, faithfulness, compromise, and dedication. Wanda was a devoted wife and mother throughout her husband's 26-year Army career, traveling and living here and abroad including, Germany, Italy, France, England, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Holland. In their travels they made lifetime friends along the way. She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, cooking, traveling, including a Caribbean Cruise on their 50 th wedding anniversary, February 15, 2004, which was her dream.  She loved reading, writing, gardening, knitting, making the best biscuits in the world, storytelling, watching Alabama football, and singing in the church choir at The First Baptist Church of Florala, where she was a lifelong member. After years raising her children, Wanda returned to school and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Special Education from Georgia Southern University in 1983. She then taught school for next 10 years. In 1993 her and Furman took to the roads in their motor home visiting family and friends traveling the east coast until 1997 when they returned and settled back to Florala. She so loved her Florala community by way of her involvement with her bridge club, study club, gardening club, church and volunteer work. Wanda Harrison is survived by her 4 children, Roger Harrison (Robynn) of Ringgold, Georgia, Kenneth Harrison (Elissa) of Rocky Mount, Virginia, Brent Harrison (Susan) of Clearwater, Florida, and Holly Arendt (Bobby) of Rome, Georgia. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Chelsie Brunelle, Kane Harrison, Megan Ogden, Zackery Harrison, Dylan Harrison, Caitlin Crenshaw, and Logan Dorr and 8 great grandchildren, Brenn, Preston, Holden, Hayden, Elias, Liam, Amelia, and Marlee. Wanda Harrison is also survived by a long list of cousins and friends with whom she shared special relationships all her life, including her devoted cousin Sue King Speir to whom she was "new mom" when Sue's precious mother, Frankie Bridges King (Wanda's aunt) had died. They had been there for each other through good times and not so good times. Wanda Harrison lived life to the absolute fullest. If you knew her, you loved her. Her laughter and smile will be greatly missed. Time with Wanda meant a joyful time and memories were made. Wanda left an imprint on everyone she met. She would want to be remembered as a good wife, mother, nana and great nana as well as a caring and faithful friend. God made an excellent choice in giving Wanda Harrison to our family. She has now joined her treasured family and friends in heaven to start a new joyful everlasting life. A celebration of life service for Rosa "Wanda" Harrison will be 11AM Saturday March 25, 2023 at The First Baptist Church in Florala.
