Roland Monroe
Wilkerson
Oct 27, 1940 — Aug 22, 2020
Roland Monroe Wilkerson, age 79, passed away at Covenant Care Saturday, August 22, 2020, in Pensacola, Florida after a short battle with brain cancer. Roland was born in Darlington, Florida on October 27, 1940 and raised in Liberty by his mother and father, Edith and Morton Wilkerson. Roland began his career as a steel worker with Green Hut Construction when he was 21 and spent the next 20+ years in some sort of construction position, steel, foreman, and road. Roland grew up on a farm and had a deep love for the land. After retiring from construction, he began his second career as a farmer, which he pursued until recently. He loved growing things, but especially loved his cows. He met the love of his life, Merita Barton in 1960 and they were married on August 25, 1962. They were blessed with a daughter, Cherie Wilkerson Orange and a son, Roland Wilkerson, Jr.
Roland was bigger than life to those who knew him, his family saw him as their very on John Wayne. He loved hard, worked hard, and was his family's biggest cheerleader. He babied his cows, loved to go fishing with his grandchildren, children, and son-in-law. Roland never met a stranger and could talk to anyone about anything. He loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed teaching life skills to his grandchildren. He had a mischievous grin that would melt your heart and crack you up all at the same time. He will be missed more than words could ever convey.
Roland was preceded in death my his father, Morton Wilkerson; mother, Edith Wilkerson; and brother, Gerald Wilkerson.
Roland is survived by his wife of 58 years, Merita Barton Wilkerson of Liberty, FL; daughter, Cherie Wilkerson Orange and husband, Bill Orange and their daughters Zoe and Kenzie of Paxton, FL; son, Roland Wilkerson and wife, Heather Wilkerson and their children Kaitlyn and Konner of Westville, FL; sister, Jan Yoder of Simi Valley, CA; brother, Kenneth Wilkerson of Liberty, FL; and sister, JoAnn Wilkerson of Salem, AL. He is also survived by an abundance of loving family, including a special brother-in-law and three special sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends
