Obituary

Nellie Roberts Day, age 88, of Opp, Alabama, passed away September 29, 2026. She was born August 4, 1938, in Florala, Alabama, the daughter of Daniel Roberts and Ella Pickron Roberts.

Nellie found joy in the simple, beautiful things in life. She loved planting flowers, arranging them around her home, and tending them with care. Her gift for nurturing extended far beyond her flower beds. Through cooking for her church family and her own family, Nellie carried out a ministry of love and hospitality. Her famously delicious pecan pie was a favorite, and every meal she prepared was an expression of her generous heart.

Her hometown of Florala always held a special place in her heart. From her younger years through her life as a senior adult, she looked forward to the 24th of June. The parades, carnivals, and familiar faces made it a cherished homecoming, where friends returned to their roots and renewed friendships that time and distance could never erase. It was at one of these special celebrations that she met her husband, Newton, making the occasion an especially treasured part of her life.

Above all, Nellie loved her family. Nothing mattered more to her than the generations she helped nurture, and she treasured being called “Granny” by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-granddaughter. That beloved name became a lasting expression of who she was, a source of comfort, kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love.

Nellie was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Laurel Hill, Florida. The words on her Bible bookmark reflected the life she lived: she turned no one away, freely offered love, shared with those in need, and was ready to pray for anyone at any time. Through her encouragement, compassion, and faithful prayers, she helped turn lives around. Her special smile welcomed others, and her life bore witness to the mighty power of Christ living through her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Newton Day; her father, Daniel Roberts; her mother, Ella Pickron Roberts; her brother, Edward Roberts; her sisters, Alice Roberts and Inez Williams; and her son, Buddy Day.

She is survived by her sons, Jack Day (Charlotte) and Rob Day (Traci); her daughter, Darlene Maloy; her grandchildren, Jessica Moore (Nate), Amanda Day, Melinda Killian (Justin), Josh Maloy (Brandi), Kristin Maloy, and Heather Day; her great-grandchildren, Clete, Case, Claira, Maggie, Emma, Brooks, Zae, and Lexie; and her great-great-granddaughter, Laura Lye Day.

Funeral services for Nellie Roberts Day will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Evans Funeral Home, with Billy Pickron officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.
