Obituary

Maryon Jackson Mitchell died on Wednesday December 7, 2022 at 83 years old at her home in Florala, Alabama. Maryon was the vision of a true southern woman; she never spoke an unkind word and cared about others more than she did herself. She exuded grace, faith and compassion. Born on January 2, 1939 as a share cropper's daughter, she was one out of five children. Her highest grade in school was sixth and having never been to town until the age of 12, she knew what it meant to have very little. She was the keeper of all things because she "may could use it one day." Maryon met Clinton Lamar Mitchell around the age of 16 when he delivered ice to a farm that her Daddy was working. A whirlwind romance set the stage, and the two were married on December 17, 1955 after some expansion of the truth in the age category on the marriage license. They grew up and old together, having three children, several careers and even a house that burned to the ground. Regardless of the trials, their love has lasted a lifetime. Maryon was a pillar of the community, most commonly known as "Mrs. Chief" when Lamar served as chief of the Florala Police Department. She was a seamstress, a homemaker and a caregiver at times. Maryon is proceeded in death by her father, Samuel B. Jackson, mother, Louise Shaddix Jackson, Huey and Ruby Mitchell, brothers, Haley and Winfred Jackson, sister, Merle Jackson, and son-in-law, Johnnie Bennett. Maryon is survived by her husband of 66 years Clinton Lamar Mitchell, daughter, Debra Mitchell Bennett (Preston Booth), daughter, Lisa Mitchell Lassiter (Steve) and son, Rickey Mitchell (Sonya) along with grandchildren, Caleb (Jennifer) Davidson, Casey Davidson, Jacob (Brittany) Lassiter, Katie (Joshua) Lassiter Weeks and Jessica (Shaun) Bennett Kidd. Maryon is also survived by her 9 great-grandchildren Mitchell and Maddox Davidson, Coraline and Chloe Lassiter, Zane and Ruby Weeks, Mason, Taylor and John Kidd. She is also survived by a sister, Joyce Jackson Holman. Maryon was a daughter, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, advice counselor, the hardest worker, a chef, the project manager, expert gardener, bird watcher, child of God, queen of girl talk, hand holder, toy maker, baby whisperer. She was exactly what God intended when he took the rib and created woman. She will be missed by all who knew her. Her family will continue to carry on spreading the knowledge and love that she showed them to the world.
