John (Johnny)
Paul Harbuck
Aug 18, 1949 — Aug 13, 2021
John Paul (Johnny) Harbuck, age 71, passed away August 13, 2021. He was born in Florala on August 18, 1949 the son of Arnold Harbuck and Dorothy Murphy Harbuck. After graduating from Florala High School in 1967, Johnny attended Auburn University to earn a Bachelor's of Science degree in Ag Education, with the goal of returning to serve his hometown as a Vocational Ag teacher. After his initial years of instruction
at Laurel Hill School from 1971-1976, he returned to Florala High School in 1976. Throughout the next 25 years, he had the chance to influence hundreds of students through woodworking and metal-shop classes, FFA club activities, and even unconventional science and math exposure through the PACERS Cooperative by assisting the students with raising fish. Many adults throughout the community also consulted with
him for agricultural efforts like farming, forest and orchard management, and an evening woodworking clinic for several years. Apart from being "Mr. Harbuck, the ag teacher," many also knew him as "the knifeman." As a hobby to earn spare money in 1975, he developed his craft for the next forty years to create many hunting knives, fillet knives, and specialty pieces. After retiring from Florala High School, he focused more on attending regional gun shows and requests from online customers. This effort was often balanced with hunting and fishing trips with his closest friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Harbuck of Florala; sons Ben Harbuck (Marlena) of Texas City, Texas and Tyrel Harbuck of Aberdeen, South Dakota; and younger brother Allen (Pat) Harbuck of Pickerington, Ohio. He is also survived by former wife, Terri O'Brien of Texas City, Texas; special friends Junior, Wendi, and Tony Boutwell in addition to several very close friends and neighbors; nieces and nephews; grandchildren Cody (Rachel) Jones and 3 children and Nicholas (Megan) Jones and 2 children.
He was preceded in death by his parents and elder brother, Frank Harbuck.
