Obituary

Joe McLaney, age 91, of Laurel Hill, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, just days before his 92nd birthday.

Joe was born on April 8, 1934, in Geneva County, Alabama, to the late James Malcolm McLaney and Prelly Riley McLaney.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catharine McLaney; his parents; his brothers, Earl McLaney (Hazel), Bernice McLaney (Waunette) and Eugene McLaney (Lorene); and his sisters, Jewel Johnson (Robert), Josephine Hendrix (Junior). Glenda Bishop (Harry).

Joe is survived by his children, Joel McLaney and Sonya McLaney; stepdaughter, Denise Hughes, his cherished grandchildren, Kaylyn Allen and Joshua McLaney; and his great-granddaughter, Griffin Allen, who brought him great joy as "Pawpaw." He is also survived by an abundance of extended family, including numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved him dearly.

Joe proudly served his country in both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to public service working with the Florida Fire Service as a fire tower supervisor. He later dedicated over 30 years of service in civil service, earning the respect of his coworkers for his strong work ethic, integrity, and steady character.

A man who loved the land, Joe spent much of his life farming and raising and loving horses. He enjoyed deer hunting, fox hunting, and fishing, and took great pride in growing a vegetable garden each year. His yard was always a reflection of his diligence; well-kept and carefully tended. One of his most treasured traditions was taking his family on annual trips to the Smoky Mountains, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.

Joe's family finds comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
