Joe Breck
Gantt
Dec 27, 1928 — Jan 2, 2021
Joe Breck Gantt, age 92, passed away at home on January 2, 2021. He was born and raised in Florala, Alabama. He earned his B.A. and J.D. degree from the University of Alabama where he was President of the senior law class and Phi Alpha Delta (an honorary law society). He was a member of the executive council for the Law School Alumni Association and was state treasurer for the Alabama League of Young Democrats. Joe served his country during the Korean War as an infantry officer and later in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps. His sense of honor and fairness distinguished him during the turbulent 1960's, as an Alabama District Attorney and a special prosecutor for civil rights violations in Alabama. Ahead of his time, especially for the South, Joe passionately fought for civil rights during a time when it was physically dangerous for both him and his family to do so. Upon moving to Florida, he founded a tax accounting business in Panama City, FL, which he and his wife ran for over 30 years. A "yellow dog" democrat, he actively supported the Democratic Party. Joe's hobbies demonstrate that he was a true renaissance man: avid fisherman, bird hunter, gardener, master chef and bridge player, and vodka martini connoisseur. A cherished, but usually unlucky few, knew him as a cunning poker player. His wit, integrity, and love of justice will be missed. Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Anne D. Gantt, his parents, Tom & Mae Belle Gantt, his daughter, Amanda Gantt Jensen and son-in-law, Derrick Jensen. He is survived by his daughter, Gretchen Gantt Franco and grandchildren, Davis Gantt Jensen and Alexis Franco.
The family offers gratitude beyond measure to the wonderful caregivers, Lynn Holley (who for over 7 years did her best to keep Joe in line, it wasn't always easy), Pam Dyson and Georgia Armstrong.
