James
York
Oct 19, 1935 — Jul 31, 2023
James Nathaniel York passed away on July 31st, 2023. James was born on October 19th, 1935 in
Arab, Alabama to Arthur (A.J) and Birdie Skidmore York. His family moved to Florala when he
was young and he grew up with his 3 siblings, Dillard, David and Mary Jane.
His life was always full of adventure and service to the community. From playing drums
in a band as a teenager to serving in the Alabama National Guard for 33 years and retiring
as Lt. Colonel. There were many interesting stories shared from getting struck by lightning
in Mississippi while at National Guard summer camp to living in Arkansas and Maryland while
serving with the Guard. He and Margaret made many lifelong friends that they loved to keep
in touch with.
James retired from Florala Memorial Hospital where he served as administrator for 29 years. He was
always proud to be a part of having a hospital in Florala.
James loved being involved in the community and volunteered his services in many ways.
He was involved in the Rotary Club, Airport Board, Little League Baseball Coach, Red Cross,
and one of his biggest passions was the Florala Rescue Squad. He worked tirelessly to have an
ambulance service to support the area, even becoming an EMT.
James' patriotism ran very deep and he was always up for a discussion on politics! He loved to
work the polls on Election Day! Even on days when his health was declining he still wanted to be
involved.
His talents at woodworking were known to many! He was always creating amazing and beautiful things
in his shop.
James was a loving and devoted family man. He raised a beautiful family with his wife, Margaret.
Married for 65 years, his memory will be cherished by children LaJuan (Doug) McGill of Johns Creek ,
Georgia, Buddy (Laurel) York of Andalusia, Alabama and Keith (Becky) York of Auburn, Alabama.
Grandchildren Justin (Whitney) McGill of Florence, Alabama, Katie McGill of Huntsville, Alabama,
