Obituary

Mr. James Royce Jones, of Bonifay, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on October 7, 1944, in the Children's Home Community, Florida, Royce was the beloved son of the late Theodore Fred Jones and Gussie Weeks Jones.

Royce devoted more than 35 years of faithful service to the State of Florida Forestry Service, where he began his career as a Forestry Ranger before later serving as Fleet Supervisor. He took great pride in his work, caring for both the forests of Florida and the equipment that kept the work moving forward. Known for his remarkable mechanical ability and discerning eye, Royce could diagnose and repair just about any engine that came his way, whether it was under the hood of a car, on a tractor, or hanging off the back of a boat. Family, friends, and neighbors knew that if Royce couldn't fix it, it probably wasn't worth fixing. He was always willing to roll up his sleeves, lend a helping hand, and never hesitated to help someone in need.

Royce loved the outdoors. Fishing was one of his greatest joys, and many peaceful hours were spent on the water with a rod in his hand. He also enjoyed hunting, though those who knew him well might tell you that his enthusiasm for hunting was because his son, Jason. Like many good fathers, Royce discovered that sometimes the greatest joy wasn't in the hunt itself, it was simply being alongside his son, making memories that would last a lifetime.

His faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of his life. Royce was an active member of his church, faithfully serving wherever there was a need and never seeking recognition for his acts of service. In his later years, as declining health presented difficult challenges, his unwavering faith became his source of strength and peace. Through every trial, he trusted the Lord who had faithfully guided him throughout his life. Truly, as the Apostle Paul wrote, Royce fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith.

Above all else, Royce treasured his family. He shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Margaret, and found great joy in spending time with her, their son Jason, and especially his precious granddaughter, Macie. Being called "PaPa" was one of the titles he cherished most, and there was no mistaking the pride and love that filled his heart whenever he heard that special name.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Fred Jones and Gussie Weeks Jones; his brother, Everett Jones; and his sister, Eloise Hulion.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 61 years, Margaret Bean Jones of Bonifay, Florida; his son, Jason Jones (Leann); his beloved granddaughter, Macie Jones; his brother, Nole Jones (Carolyn); along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends who were blessed by his kindness, generosity, and faithful example.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Eber Overly, Rev. Tim Hall and Rev. Chris Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Though Royce will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that his faith has become sight, and that the man who faithfully served his family, his community, and his Savior has now entered into the eternal presence of the Lord he loved.
