Obituary

On June 20, 2023, Clinton Lamar Mitchell of Florala, AL passed away peacefully at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, FL.  Lamar was 87 years old and died just how he lived, thinking of others first.

He was born in Samson, Al to Huey and Ruby Paul Mitchell, and was the third of five children.  He is preceded in death by his mother Ruby Paul Mitchell and father Huey Mitchell, brothers Paul, Oscar and Junior Edgar Mitchell, and Wife Mary-on Jackson Mitchell. He is survived by his children Debra (Preston) Bennett, Lisa (Steve) Lassiter and Rickey (Sonya) Mitchell. His grandchildren, Caleb (Jennifer) Davidson, Casey Davidson, Jacob (Brittany) Lassiter, Katie (Josh) Weeks, and Jessica (Shaun) Kidd along with great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Maddox Davidson, Zane and Ruby Weeks, Mason Bennett and Taylor and John Kidd, and Coraline and Chloe Lassiter and his sister Reba Mitchell Pelham.

Lamar was a humble, unassuming man who was passionate about giving back to the community.   For over 4 decades, he dedicated his life to protecting and serving as both the Chief of Police and Fire Chief.   Known simply as "Chief" to most, he was quoted as saying "you see a need and you do it."  It was this personal creed that drove his desire to ensure the community had emergency services.  To this end, Lamar worked tirelessly with other community leaders to develop the Florala Rescue Squad.

Throughout the community, Lamar saw many needs that he could fulfill.   For decades he escorted the Florala High School football team to away games and was a stalwart supporter on the sidelines. He became a Master Mason, a Shriner and an Eastern Star member. He began serving in the 1960's as Chairman of The Masonic (24th of June) Celebration where you could find him lining up the parade or shooting off fireworks.

Lamar also found needs and filled them with his personal and family life.  He showed extreme bravery in teaching his children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren how to drive.  He showed extreme patience in taking his children on long road trips in a VW Volkswagen.  He showed extreme love daily.

He was an avid gardener, mullet fisherman, and Alabama football fan.  His endearing but questionable fashion sense and love for overalls, suspenders and hats aside, He was a great man.  A man that gave so much to this community.  A man who will be missed by many.   He believed in integrity, consistency, loyalty, love and faith in The Lord. He knew it, he meant it and he lived it every day of his life. We, as his family, hope that he instilled some of that in all of us. We are comforted in knowing that he has been reunited with the love of his life at the gates of Heaven.
