Obituary

Mr. Billy Ray Dewrell, age 92, of the Damascus and Florala communities, passed peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025. Born April 5, 1933, in Florala, Alabama, Billy was a man whose life reflected hard work, devotion to family, but most importantly a deep and steady faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Billy proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After completing his service, he began what would become a lifelong career in the construction industry, specializing in the pipe and road-boring field. Through determination, skill, and a remarkable work ethic, Billy eventually acquired his own company, Southeastern Road Boring. He worked for many years in this trade and even invented a new boring drill—an innovation that set his company apart and earned him respect throughout the industry.

A faithful member of Damascus Baptist Church, Billy served as a deacon and willingly stepped into any role where he could lend a hand. Whether rolling up his sleeves for a building project or caring for the grounds, Billy was a servant-hearted man who loved his church deeply. He also served on the Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery Board, a responsibility he held with honor and care.

Billy adored his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. To the generations who followed him, he was lovingly known as "Gramps" and "Grampet." His presence, humor, and stories were treasured parts of every family gathering.

After retiring from construction, Billy continued to stay busy doing something he enjoyed. He went into business with D&D Pony Land, where he raised and sold miniature ponies. This venture brought him joy and kept him active in the later years of his life.

Billy was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel (Watson); his father, Loe D. Dewrell; his mother, Clydie Pearl (Curington); brothers, Martell Dewrell and Wayland Dewrell; and sister, Jimmie Nell (Rudd).

He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley (Griffin); son, Billy Dwayne Dewrell (Pam) daughter, Deborah Madiedo; stepdaughters, Raylaine Henderson (Tim), and Darleen Dupuis (Tommy); along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who loved him dearly and will cherish his memory always.

Billy Ray Dewrell lived a life marked by service, generosity, and unwavering faith. His legacy will continue through his family, his church, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
