Obituary

Rayford Gilmore, age 87, of Kinston, Alabama, passed away on July 21, 2026.

Born on May 31, 1939, Rayford was the beloved son of Alan Gilmore and Myrtis Sanson Gilmore. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, answering the call to serve with honor, courage, and humility. His military service reflected the quiet strength and steadfast character that remained with him throughout his life.

Following his military service, Rayford devoted himself to a lifetime of hard work. As a skilled heavy equipment operator and a dedicated farmer for more than 42 years, he believed in earning an honest day's wage and caring faithfully for the land. His work ethic and commitment to providing for his family earned the respect of all who knew him.

Away from work, Rayford found joy in the outdoors. He loved squirrel hunting and spending peaceful hours fishing for brim. Those simple pleasures brought him contentment and allowed him to enjoy God's beautiful creation.

Above all else, Rayford loved his family. Nothing meant more to him than those he held dear, and few titles brought him greater joy than being called "PawPaw" by his grandchildren. The love he shared with them will remain a lasting treasure in their hearts.

Rayford professed a sincere faith in Jesus Christ that remained an important part of his life. Throughout many difficult health struggles, he looked to the Lord for strength and comfort. While the burdens of this life can at times become overwhelming, Christians find hope in the promise that God's mercy is greater than our weakness and that His grace is sufficient. Today, we entrust Rayford to the loving hands of the Savior he believed in, finding comfort in God's perfect justice, His unfailing mercy, and His everlasting love.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Gwendolyn Gilmore; his sons, Bernon Gilmore, Norman Gilmore and Robert Gilmore, (Ella Jean); and his daughters, Julia Hilliard and Janet Gilmore. He is also survived by his brother, Clarence Gilmore, and his sister, Evelyn Marshall. In addition, he leaves behind an abundance of extended family and loved ones, including numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly knew him as "PawPaw"  He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Funeral services for Rayford Gilmore will be 2PM Friday, July 24, 2026, at Evans Funeral Home with Joe Farris officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Harrison Cemetery.
